MechAxis vs The Leading Hand: plan your next system
Evaluate MechAxis as a Leading Hand alternative, distinguishing the desktop product from its announced cloud edition and testing a safe move.

MechAxis and The Leading Hand side by side
The The Leading Hand column was read from their own public pages on 4 November 2026. Vendor offerings change, so confirm anything that decides your purchase at the source.
| Capability | MechAxis | The Leading Hand |
|---|---|---|
| Product access | 30-day trial with Platinum features | New cloud site announces coming soon; confirm access |
| Older installation model | Browser-based workspace and installable web app | Desktop FAQ describes Windows and hosted options |
| Workshop floor | Assigned jobs, time, tasks and inspections | Confirm capabilities in the specific edition offered |
| Migration | CSV preview and validation for supported record types | Confirm desktop exports and cloud migration arrangements |
| Accounting | Xero setup validation; no MYOB | Desktop interfaces and new cloud claims must be checked separately |
Choose a workflow you can test with your team
MechAxis is our choice for a workshop ready to evaluate browser-based bookings, inspections, purchasing and invoicing now. Its 30-day trial includes Platinum features without a card. Invite your advisor and technician, then run a repair together before committing. For an established Leading Hand user, the strongest MechAxis advantage is the opportunity to test a connected workflow on the devices the team will use, with explicit plans for customers, stock and historical records.
The desktop and cloud offers are different
The Leading Hand's older site describes a Windows desktop product, optional hosted access and single- or multi-user licensing. Its newer site announces a cloud edition and was labelled coming soon with a launch list when reviewed. Do not treat the entire brand as permanently desktop-only, and do not assume announced cloud capabilities are already available to your workshop. Ask which edition is being demonstrated and what can be purchased and used today.
Replace the handoffs, not just the installation
Start a MechAxis booking with the customer, vehicle and concern, then carry those details into the job. On Gold or Platinum, capture inspection findings and send selected work for approval. Have the technician finish the resulting tasks and return the job to the service team. A browser alone does not make that process better. The benefit is that each person can work from the same customer and repair context rather than maintaining parallel job descriptions.
Preserve history before choosing a cutover date
An old workshop database can contain years of registration changes, customer relationships and handwritten attachments. Keep an intact export and a readable archive. MechAxis CSV tools support a controlled sample import of customers, vehicles and parts; validate the supported fields before scaling up. Record separately which old jobs, invoices and attachments must remain accessible in the original archive. Importing contact records is not proof that every historical record has moved.
Use the move to improve access on the floor
Give technicians individual accounts and test assigned jobs, time, tasks and inspection capture from a workshop tablet. Check that the next person can understand the work without seeing internal finance information. MechAxis Gold includes up to ten users and Platinum has unlimited users, so the team can evaluate individual access against its expected size. Confirm internet coverage at the actual work bays and establish what staff will do during a connection outage.
Keep accounting requirements explicit
The Leading Hand's desktop documentation lists accounting interfaces; the announced cloud edition makes its own integration claims. Ask for the exact edition and data flow. MechAxis offers Xero setup validated per workshop and has no MYOB integration. A move is ready only when your supported imports, staff workflow and accounting responsibilities are clear. Choose MechAxis when the trial demonstrates those requirements, rather than waiting on a feature merely because it appears in a future product tour.

Common questions
01Is The Leading Hand still desktop-only?+
No blanket claim is appropriate. Its older site documents the desktop product; the newer site announces a cloud edition. Check the edition and release availability directly.
02Can MechAxis automatically migrate the entire old database?+
Do not assume a complete automatic migration. Trial supported CSV imports and agree how historical documents, balances and open work will be retained.
